Alex, a 25 year old college student was struck with a great idea one fine day. He had one great idea that was going to make him a lot of money. It was a great idea, but there were some problems that he had to face.
He had a great product and he knew basic html and bought himself a domain name and hosting. He thought that it was going to be a hit. He spent countless hours day and night refining his site and skipped class to make his site perfect.
There was one problem. He didn’t know how to promote his site. He had spent some of his savings on basic advertisements such as adwords. But months had passed and there was still no result. He decided that it was not going to work and decided to give up.
What went wrong?
He thought, maybe if he had the great idea and built his site a few years back, things would have been different. Search engines today are different than search engines in the past. Search engine, specifically Google has evolved a lot since a decade or two ago.
Alex had a great product but he was not able to promote his product on his site. He relied on search engines to drive traffic to his website but it had failed miserably. He thought that he had the skills to promote his site and make some money, but he didn’t. His search engine optimization skills that he acquired a few years back had become obsolete. They no longer work and Alex decided to give up.
Search engines today are different from the past. Back in the days, search engine was filled with useful content and everybody contributed to add content to the Internet. But times had changed. Search engines are filled with spam from people trying to game the search engine system. Things turn pretty bad for genuine sites.
It is much harder for a site to rank now than previously. A new site, even with a domain name will most definitely fail to get traffic if it relies entirely on search engine traffic. Adwords cost a lot to advertise a small site that cannot even afford to make any money. Facebook ads that do not convert really well. The cost of advertising has increased. Advertising companies are making a lot of money.
Search engines today choose their content from trusted sites. Well established sites. Contents from small bloggers or newly established genuine sites find it more difficult to get a piece of the pie. The only way is to spend more money on advertising in hopes of gaining back the return of investment and start to earn. The other method? Make a unique viral campaign that people will share in Facebook or YouTube. What are the chances? Slim to none..
What does the future holds for new sites?
We do not really know. What we do know is that, things change rapidly and we have to adapt to the changes and act fast. Grab the opportunity before somebody discovers it.
